Windows has long offered a virtual keyboard. But with Windows 8 destined for tablets and other mobile devices, Microsoft has reportedly revamped the keyboard with a new look and feel. Unlike the current keyboard, which requires mouse clicks to operate, the new keyboard will offer touch friendly buttons along with a split keyboard option, according to WinRumors, which has posted a video demo of the new virtual keyboard.

The Win 8 keyboard will reportedly provide built-in support for emoticons and feedback sounds similar to those heard in Windows Phone, WinRumors added.

Also new to Windows 8, at least as found in the latest build, is some type of per-feature licensing, uncovered by a “Windows enthusiast” on Twitter who examined the code for the latest build, according to tech site Redmond Pie. Though the code didn’t reveal the use for this feature, Redmond Pie speculates that this could let Microsoft offer all users a “barebones” version of Windows and then prompt them to purchase new features as needed.

Another new feature discovered by Redmond Pie in the 7989 build was support for Short Message Service (SMS). Used for mobile communications, SMS would give Windows 8-based tablets and other devices the ability to directly send text messages. Along with SMS, geo-location is yet one more feature in the latest Windows 8 build reported by Redmond Pie, which says this could be used to automatically detect a user’s time zone.

Beyond the many updates and new features that users will see in Windows 8, developers are also facing a slew of changes in writing for the new operating system.

Some developers have reportedly been upset due to Microsoft’s lack of clarity over which programming platforms would be supported by Windows 8. Programmers accustomed to using Visual Basic, .Net, and Silverlight have been confused over certain Microsoft comments that HTML5 and JavaScript would be the tools used to develop Windows 8 applications.

A Q&A published today between three Microsoft developers and Mary Jo Foley from CNET sister site ZDNet attempts to clarify some of the confusion over the new Windows 8 programming environment.

Microsoft demoed Windows 8 earlier this month at the D9 conference in California. Windows President Steven Sinofsky touted the upcoming OS as one that would be geared for desktops, laptops, and tablets.

Nokia is planning one of its first more entry-level Symbian Anna phones. A new leak Monday has shown the N5 using a now relatively small touchscreen and a five-megapixel camera but with a current and even possibly newer interface. The OS seen by GSMArena now has a very MeeGo-like app grid that’s likely to help keep consistency between all of the non-Windows phone platforms.

Along with the N5, new N6 and N7 phones are also due to follow and would presumably add larger screens, higher resolution cameras and other touches. They will likely replace many of the low- and mid-range 5000-series phones still running Symbian S60.

Nokia is transitioning away from Symbian but has promised as many as 10 new phones on the platform over the course of the next year. Many of these will skew towards the low end as the high end is replaced by the MeeGo-running N9 and its first Windows Phone hardware.

The N5 will be available in black and white colored versions, with the white colored model having a lime green rear. On the front you can see the touchscreen display, which looks like it could be around 3.2-inch in size and call, end and menu buttons below it. The right side has the volume control and camera shutter buttons while the left side is left blank. On the back is a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and a loudspeaker below.

Jailbreaker George Hotz, better known as Geohot, has started working at Facebook based on a post found at his personal page (friends only). After P0sixninja (Josh Hill) claimed in an interview (below) to have been rebuffed on a challenge to Hotz to find an iPad 2 boot ROM exploit because of Hotz’s Facebook job, Techmeme’s Gabe Rivera dug through the Facebook personal profile and found confirmation that the device hacker had started work in May and made it public on June 17. What role he has or what projects he’s developing are both still unknowns.

A chance exists that he may be working on the official Facebook iPad app. Its development is unusual since it would be shipping less than a year after Mark Zuckerberg dismissed the possibility in November, instead preferring the desktop-optimized page. Hotz’s skill set is diverse but got him his initial recognition from iOS: he was the first to successfully unlock the iPhone in 2007 and went so far as to use soldering before he and others later learned how to crack the restrictions entirely in software.

More recently, most of Hotz’s recognition has come from his PlayStation 3 jailbreaking efforts. Along with having one of the more popular workarounds for Sony’s mid-cycle ban on the “other OS” feature, he became the symbolic head of opposition to what has been seen by many as a violation of rights to modify one’s own device. While not a true victory, he obtained a much more conciliatory settlement where Sony had been threatening more serious consequences and had previously been bent on following through on its lawsuit.

Facebook hasn’t commented on the recruitment, although it may see Hotz as a welcome return to form for iOS if that becomes his focus. Its iPhone app was originally developed almost single-handedly by Joe Hewitt, who at first backed out of developing the app and later left Facebook entirely in May, just as Hotz was about to step in.
